There is an ever-growing interest in crime. This is evidenced by the increasing amount of media attention devoted to criminogenic news stories and the law and order challenges facing the government. Additionally, more and more TV programmes feature compelling drama all about crime and crime fighting agencies.
The Criminology group is not a dull academic study of crime, we try to get inside actual crimes and inside the minds of criminals and crime fighters.
There is a vast range of potential activities and discussions we cover. We revisit old cases to determine if the guilty finding was sound (with a nod to the Thursday Murder Club). We set up our own appeal court with members taking on the roles of jurors, lawyers, and judges. We will attempt a bit of criminal profiling as pioneered by the FBI at Quantico.
There is an on-going debate about bringing back hanging. We would not dodge this difficult issue. There are many opportunities to explore hangings and executioners from our past.
We would not just be a discussion group. Visits would be an important part of group activities. There are many potential places to attract us, Crown, Magistrates and Coroners courts, museums of crime, prisons, victim support, probation, the Old Bailey.
We might have a lot of fun looking at various crime writers and TV/Film crime stories to determine their credibility.
The emphasis will be on having fun, learning new things, and taking in new experiences.
