The Philosophy Group has, to date, studied traditional Western Philosophy – there’s a lot of it.  We are currently working our way, slowly, through Nigel Warburton’s book “Philosophy: the basics",

We meet every four weeks and work our way through a few more pages.  The pace we go is really determined by the group. The discussion is quite lively sometimes, we quite often digress and we laugh a lot. However, contributing to the discussion isn’t obligatory, some members like to just listen.  What is compulsory is that group members enjoy it.

No previous knowledge is required, most of the group members don’t have any.  What is needed is a curious, open mind, to be happy to consider ideas and concepts and not always understand everything completely.  Philosophy is not intended to answer questions such as what is the meaning of life, but it should help you to think in a way that will help you find your own answers.

Another way of putting this is the following quote from an Australian contemporary philosopher:

“Philosophy has many aims distinct from discovering truths. Philosophy also aims to raise a question, to help us understand, to help us see the world differently, to live better lives, to improve the world, and so on. New and improved concepts certainly can help with those things.” (From David Chalmers “What is conceptual engineering and what should it be?"

Unfortunately, the group is full at present – members feel that if it is too big it would inhibit some people from asking questions or offering their opinion.  The waiting list is short though, so please contact me if you have burning desire to know more.
